Pre-conference field trip

Pre-conference field trip ticket

Description

Date:
7. October

Topic:
„Structure and Miocene to recent evolution of the Carpathian orogenic front and associated foreland basin”

Info:
Evolution of foreland basins is controlled by fold-and-thrust in front of which they form, and by flexural or non-flexural behavior of the lower plate. Northern segment of the Miocene Carpathian foreland basin is located in a very special part of Europe as it is superimposed on the Teisseyre-Tornquist Zone, i.e. one of the most fundamental geological boundaries in Europe, and adjacent segments of the East European and West European platforms. During the pre-conference field trip, scheduled for October 7, we will be visiting several localities along the front of the Carpathian FTB, partly developed within the deformed Miocene deposits of the Carpathian foreland basin. Discussion of field geology will be supported by presentation of seismic reflection data that will illustrate structural style and complex interaction of thrusting (often also backthrusting and formation of triangle zones), syn-compressional sedimentation, and flexural extension of the lower plate. One of the stops will be in the world-famous Wieliczka salt mine (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wieliczka_Salt_Mine) where very complex structures developed within the evaporitic Miocene succession of the Carpathian foreland basin could be observed.
